John Pardue - Director of Photography

About John

Throughout my career as Director of Photography, I have had the good fortune to work all over the world, building a wealth of experience in feature films, TV dramas, commercials, music promos and live concerts, documentaries and award-winning short films.

Recent drama projects include ‘The Girl’ (HBO/BBC) about the making of the Hitchcock film The Birds, with Sienna Miller and Toby Jones, directed by Julian Jarrold. The movie was Emmy-nominated for its cinematography; 'An Adventure in Space and Time' about the creation of the first Doctor Who in 1963, directed by Terry Mcdonagh and nominated for a BSC Award for 'Best Cinematography in a Drama'. Other recent drama credits include ‘The Bletchley Circle’ (world) directed by Andy De Emmony with Anna Maxwell Martin; 'DXM' (Terra Marta/Warners), a visual effects based sic-fi movie with Sam Neil; 'Galavant' Ep6 (Disney) including Ricky Gervais and Rutger Hauer; the bio pic 'Seve' shot in Cantabria, Spain, directed by John-Paul Davidson. Previous drama credits include the movie 'Resistance' with Andrea Riseborough and Michael Sheen, directed by Amit Gupta; ‘The Debt’, ‘When I’m 64’ and ‘A Very Social Secretary’ for director Jon Jones; ‘The Stepfather’ directed by Ashley Pearce; the HBO movie ‘Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel’ directed by Gareth Carrivick, starring Chriss O’Dowd and Anna Farris; and war/horror film ‘The Bunker’ directed by Robert Green with an ensemble cast including Eddie Marsden, Jack Davenport and Jason Flemyng.

As Director of Photography, I'm often combining lighting and operating but I also welcome opportunities to work with operators. I am an experienced drama operator including remote head operating and years of hand held work. Although shooting for many years on 35mm/16mm, more recent films have been photographed digitally with the Alexa, Red Epic and the Phantom for high speed work.

I was born in New York and work in the USA as well as the UK, holding a dual citizenship/American and UK passport. I have also worked in many other countries, including South Africa, Czech Republic, Hungary, Canada, France, Germany, Russia, Spain, Portugal, Madagascar, Morocco, Egypt, Bali, Turkey, Lebanon, Thailand, Argentina, India, China, Poland, Japan, Italy, Caribbean, Ukraine, Romania, Austria and Qatar.

Alongside drama work, I have also shot commercials and music videos. Commercials have ranged from large studio shoots to small location-based films and resulted in a wide diversity of styles and products. I have had the good fortune to work with some top commercials directors and award-winning creative teams.
